THE CHURCH OF GOD FLAG

Over 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ said in Matthew 16:18 “…I will build my church…”. The fulfilment of this can be seen in Mark 3:13,14 and also in Luke 6:12-16. 1 Peter 2:9 describes the Church Jesus established as “an holy nation, a peculiar people…”. It would only seem plausible that The Church of God as a Holy Nation have its own unique flag that would serve as an identification marker that the Church may be physically identified and spiritually represented.

While The Church of God does not advocate the worship of this flag, utmost respect should be shown for all that it represents. The flag in itself holds no supernatural powers. Any spiritual manifestation wrought in conjunction with the Church flag would only be because of God’s favor and approval upon it. This could be likened to what transpired in Acts 19:11-12 when handkerchiefs were brought to the Apostle Paul to be anointed and sent out to be laid upon the sick that they might be healed. The cloths had no power within themselves, it was simply God approving the act of faith as a point of contact. Let it be clear, the main purpose of The Church of God flag is to represent Christ and His Holy Nation.

An Explanation of The Design and Colors

The unique design and colors of The Church of God flag have specific scriptural distinctions.

The first emblem inside the oval is a ScepteR.

The scepter in ancient times represented authority and royal power. “I shall see him, but not now; I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a star out of Jacob, and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel” (Numbers 24:17). “Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre” (Psalm 45:6). “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power” (Colossians 2:9.10). Therefore, it should be understood that the sceptre represents the authority Christ has. This also reveals that the Church as the Body of Christ has authority with Him. “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 16:19).

The second emblem inside the oval is a Star.

The star is meant to represent Christ Jesus, the bright and morning star. “I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16). “…Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy” (Matthew 2:2,10). Christ is the one that causes the Church to have meaning and purpose. The Church can only be beautiful when the “Day Star”, which is Jesus Christ shines in and through her. “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). When Christ ascended back to Heaven He placed His light in the Church to help show others the way in this spiritually dark and wicked world. “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Let your light so shine before men…” (Matthew 5:14,16a).

The third emblem inside the oval is a Crown.

This represents Christ Jesus as the reigning King. Herod asked in Matthew 2:2 “Where is he that is born King of the Jews?” Christ came as the King of a heavenly kingdom. “…Jesus came…preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:14,15). “for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings” (Revelation 17:14). “In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of the people” (Isaiah 28:5). The star, as the central symbol, naturally stands for Christ, who is the center of our faith and who will at the end of time bestow the crown of life upon all who have come into His blessed kingdom.

The color Blue on the flag represents Truth.

“Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah” (Psalm 60:4). “Jesus saith…I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Everywhere one turns it seems that there is a prevailing compromise regarding the truth. Therefore, it is imperative that the Church be the “…pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). Wherever The Church of God flag is present, it is to bear witness that the truth of God’s Word is being upheld and proclaimed there.

The color Purple on the flag is to represent the royalty of King Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6,7 speaks of His royalty and kingship. 1 Peter 2:9 states, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood…” Christ reigns over His people. In the Book of Revelation chapter twenty it speaks of how that the Church shall reign with Christ a thousand years here on earth.

The color White on the flag represents the holiness and purity of Christ.

1 Peter 1:9; 2:21-23 speaks of the spotless, sinless, holy Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. The Church is to also be pure and holy. “That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish” (Ephesians 5:27).

The color Red on the flag represents the blood of Christ Jesus which was shed for all mankind and was the purchase price of the Church.

1 John 1:7 says, “…the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” Acts 20:28 states, “…the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”

The Blue Stripes form a square with openings at the top and bottom.

These stripes represent the Fold of God, The Church of God, the gathering fold of God for Christians. “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd” (John 10:16).

Solomon asked the question, “Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?” (Song of Solomon 6:10) This Army of the Lord is raising her banner that it may be displayed because of the Truth she loves.

The Oval in the center of the flag represents that Christ is the unifying factor in the Church.

The Church will be perfect and in complete unity at the time of the rapture.

“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13).

Through this brief expose it is our hope that you have been able to see that The Church of God flag points to the headship of Christ in the Church and that Christ has a holy nation which has been called to stand for the truth.
